A few days ago I discovered the charity, To Write Love On Her Arms, and was just amazed by what they were doing. I kept thinking, I wish there was something I could do. I am a recovering cutter who was diagnosed with depression a few years ago, and every day is a struggle. I couldn't get the concept of TWLOHA out of my head; I wished I could have had a resource like that a few years ago, and I wished that there was a way that I could help people--kids, teenagers, adults, anyone--who are going through what I went through.
I was browsing through a TWLOHA supporter community, where someone mentioned the idea of sending letters to each other. Writing helps me, in more ways than words can explain. Whether I am writing in my personal journal, updating my blog or writing a novel, I feel so much more free, so much better than I did before. Writing brought me from wanting to kill myself and cutting on a daily basis to growing into a stronger person who could cope with her inner demons. I wanted so badly to do something to help others, and suddenly the idea hit me on my head: why not start up a community where we can post our addresses and send each other letters of love?
It takes just five minutes a day to write someone a letter. You can write about anything: your pet, your car, your favorite band, how bad or good your day was, coping methods of yours. I know one of the other things that helped me most was having something to look forward to. Imagine, on your worst day, receiving a piece of mail that isn't junk. A piece of mail from someone who understands what you are going through, and wants to be your friend.
So let's do this. Let's write each other Letters of Love.
Anyone who would like for me to write them a letter, please send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org or send me a message on MySpace!
